How to Get Your First Credit Card

I got my first credit card – a Verizon Visa with a $1,000 credit limit – when I was only 18 and still a couple of weeks away from graduating high school. The card issuer called me, took my application over the phone, and let me know I was approved within minutes.

It’s not as easy for young adults to get a credit card these days. Credit card issuers are no longer allowed to solicit card applications from young adults. Also, if you’re under 21, you must have your own source of income or you have to get a co-signer for your credit card. It’s for your own good. Having an income ensures you can pay back whatever credit card balance you charge.
