Tax refund application to be enabled via ATMs soon

The Income Tax department seems to be interested in continuing its collaboration with banks in offering services to customers. After the positive response received from customers regarding facilities like offering TDS information through internet banking to tax payments at ATMs, the I-T department is aiming to add to the services being offered through this channel.

The next set of services planned to be channelized through banks is likely to be application for tax refunds and tax credits via bank ATMs.

Not only application of tax refunds, the taxpayers would also be able to check the status of their refund applications at ATMs.

“The revenue department plans to expand collaboration with banks. Taxpayers will be able to apply for refunds and get them through ATMs. They may also be allowed to file returns through ATMs. The idea is in initial stages, but some Nordic countries such as Sweden have already implemented it,” said an official from the finance ministry.

Through these facilities, it is expected that taxpayers would be more motivated to comply to taxation procedures and thus collections would increase.
